Brief Description
Sterling silver trophy/tankard. Lower body and bell-shaped lid of trophy features floral patterns. At the top of the lid is a knob resembling a cricket ball, and the lid handle resembles a wicket. On the upper section of the reverse is an engraved image of a man in a top hat batting in front of a wicket, with a pavilion in the background. On the upper section of the obverse is an engraved inscription reading, in part, "To / MR. HENRY SAMPSON / of Sheffield / FROM HIS FELLOW TOWNSMEN / admirers and patrons of the / Noble game of Cricket / ... / Presented Dec the 4th 1848". Maker's marks under base suggest this item was produced in London in 1770.
