Brief Description
Sterling silver trophy comprising a winged conical cup joined onto a stem resembling the Caduceus of Mercury (ie. a winged rod with two snakes intertwining around it), joined onto a raised circular base. Engraved inscription at obverse of trophy reads: 'MEMBERS 1/4 MILE HANDICAP/1ST PRIZE/APRIL 10; 1869./W. G. GRACE'. Makers marks are at top left of obverse. On reverse face is the shield of the 'London Athletic Club', featuring the motto: 'Vincit qui patitur', meaning "The one who is patient wins".
