Brief Description
Ornate silver cup - much like a church chalice - with a broad rim, slender body, curvaceous stem and broad base. Ornate floral and geometric patterns are engraved around the cup. On obverse, inside a text window is the inscription, "Presented / TO / John Lillywhite / BY THE / SUSSEX COUNTY CRICKET CLUB". The Sussex C.C.C. coat-of-arms also features. On the reverse is the inscription, "In recognition of / HIS GREAT MERITS AS / a Cricketer / & of the valuable services which for / Twenty Years / HE RENDERED TO THE / County Eleven / Augst.,14th,1871.". Maker's mark on upper left of cup " R H " followed by silver hallmarks. Underneath the cup base is scratched " 1718 " and stamped "104 ".
