Object Detail

Brief Description
Nineteenth-century lithograph of a cricket match at Lord's Cricket Ground between the Gentlemen and Players. The image is printed in colour and shows cricketers playing on an oval with spectators (mostly men in top hats), watching from the boundary. Several buildings are in the background, including a pavilion, outside which a Union Jack is flying from a flagpole. A red flag is flying from a pole in the foreground, next to two figures who are sitting on raised chairs, presumably scoring. The image has a decorative border, with cricket bats and stumps at the top, and two floral motifs on either side, incorporating lightly-rendered images of cricketers. The name of the lithographer is printed directly below the image, and a longer inscription underneath gives the title, subject, and publisher of the print, "CRICKETING / (Lord Cricket Ground, St John's Wood, Match of the Gentlemen & Players) / Drawn expressly for the 'Book of Field Sports' / London; Henry Lea, 22, Warwick Lane". Written on reverse, "5".
