Brief Description
Black and white photograph with brown card mount. Image depicts two cricket teams wearing whites and blazers. The inscription beneath image printed in gold reads 'A.I.F. XI. v. SOUTH AFRICA / Johannesburg, November, 1919'. The players' names are handwritten in ink on the image in the foreground. This photo depicts the famous AIF XI side. After their successful tour of England in 1919 they returned home via South Africa, playing 10 games, 8 of them first class, without a defeat. In this game at Johannesburg against a South African XI in November, 1919, Herbert Collins made a masterly 235 out of the AIF's total of 441. He and Gregory were stars on this section of the tour. Five members of the AIF side - Collins, Gregory, Pellew, Taylor and Oldfield - went on to represent Australia in the immediate post-war revival of Test cricket. Handwritten pencil inscription on reverse reads 'A.I.F. XI v. Sth Af' [underlined]. Remainder of inscription is illegible.
