Object Detail

Brief Description
Graphite pencil drawing in a sketchy style on thick, rough, light brown paper. It depicts a building, large with a colonial feel, drawn with great detail. In front of this is a cricket match in progress, with spectators lounging under a tree nearby. The sketch is titled, "'THE AUSTRALIAN CONVALESCENT DEPOT' CHANGI P.O.W. CAMP 1942 - 3 / (previously the Selarang Officer's Mess of the 2nd Bn. The Gordon Highlanders)". The artist, John A Remington, has initialled the sketch, reads, "J.A.R.". John Remington was an officer posted to Singapore before the outbreak of World War II. He fought in the defence of Singapore, and following the surrender was interned at Changi as a Prisoner of War. This sketch was made whilst he was held at Changi, and was later hidden in a cigarette tin under one of the huts, when he was relocated to work on one of the railway camps. Remington retrieved the drawing from Changi after being freed at the end of the war. The drawing is housed under dark green matting, in a thick dark brown wood frame with a gold painted detail.
