Object Detail
Brief Description
Square-shaped, white linen handkerchief, featuring images printed with black dye of various Australian cricketers from the first official Australian team tour of England in 1878. In the centre is a group portrait of the team showing the players, dressed in cricket whites and caps, positioned seated and standing in two rows, with one man wearing a suit. Their names are printed below, with an ornate coat of arms, two cricket bats and a scroll bearing the inscription "THE AUSTRALIAN CRICKET TEAM". In each of the corners are individual portraits of cricketers John Blackham, Charles Bannerman, Frederick Spofforth and William Murdoch, posing variously with cricket bats and balls. The handkerchief is surrounded by a wiggly border.
