Brief Description
Ian Johnson's personal diary, compiled during tour of the West Indies in 1955 by the Australian cricket team, of which Johnson was captain. The diary itself is a red almanac style for 1955 with black binding tape on spine. Johnson's entries relate to experiences on and off the field throughout the tour, including match commentary "...Batting failure - not due to lack of courage..." (6 January) and comic banter "...let me take your photo so I can have it on my headstone..." (17 March). Fellow cricket team mates are mentioned, including Richie Benaud and Keith Miller. A loose newspaper article clipping inside the cover, dated 28 April includes photographs of a cricket match as well as Johnson chatting during a sports press function. Front cover of diary features a black pressed title: CONQUEST / DIARY / 1955 / NO.27 / NORMAN BROS. PTY. LTD. / 60 - 62 ELIZABETH STREET, MELBOURNE / TELEPHONE CENTRAL 6780 (8 LINES). The cover page has a hand written note, possibly: DENIS / BARBADOS / TRINIDAD / ???.
