Object Detail
Brief Description
Small etching of a cricket match in progress, attached to a larger card mount. Etching shows a bowler about to deliver the ball to a batsman. There is another batsman at the bowler's end of the pitch, and a third leaning on his bat a little way behind the batsman facing the delivery. A man standing next to the pitch with a cane under his arm watches the play. There is a wicket-keeper and two other fielders also visible in the etching. A crowd of spectators looks on in the left background. The ground is surrounded be a fence. Buildings are visible beyond the fenceline in the background, two of which have smoking chimneys. There is a small wooden hut inside the fenceline in the middle distance, to the right of the bowler. Handwritten pencil marking on reverse of etching. The etching is attached to the mount by tape attached to top reverse of etching. Mount had a gold gilt border surrounding the etching, as well as a number of additional hand drawn border lines. Writing on reverse of mount above image next to mounting tape reads 'LORDS/1817'. Handwritten in pencil along bottom edge of reverse of mount are the words 'Soft ground etching'.
