Brief Description
Circular gold medal (Part 1) suspended on a short linked chain. The medal is accompanied by a dark blue presentation case with gold trim and white velveteen and satin lining (Part 2) and a blue cardboard box with lid (Part 3-4). On the obverse of the medal is the motif of a women [Nike] draped in cloth holding an olive wreath above her head in her right hand, and a palm in her left hand. A Greek vase (amphora) is depicted on the left and the image of a Roman amphitheatre is on the right. Above the amphitheatre is imprinted the text, "GIOCHI DELLA / XVII OLIMPIADE / ROMA MCMLX". On the reverse is a scene depicting a group of males carrying a single male on their shoulders. The carried man is holding a palm frond in his left hand, and has his right arm raised above his head. The accompanying blue box (part 3-4) is imprinted with the logo of, 'Birks', and has the word "Australia" handwritten on the lid in red pen.
