Brief Description
Framed and mounted reproduction of a lithograph (wood engraving) by Samuel Calvert (1828-1913). Lithograph is titled 'VELOCIPEDE RACE ON THE MELBOURNE CRICKET GROUND' and shows a bicycle race held at the M.C.G. in front of a large crowd. The two riders pictured are the first place getter, Mr J. Finlay of Fitzroy and second place getter Mr R. Warnock of Emerald Hill. The two men on the right are the starter, Mr Wardell and one of the Judges. The velocipede race was the first race of its kind which had been attempted in the colony. Lithograph was originally published in the Illustrated Australian news for home readers.
