Object Detail

Brief Description
Silver coloured shield shaped badge awarded to William Todd. Front of badge bears a central teardrop panel depicting 10 men in military uniform (including 2 or 3 on horseback), as well as four other panels depicting defence forces in action. Panels are separated by a cross design and a 'v' shaped floral garland. Front of badge also bears a gloved hand design at the base of the cross reaching for the Australian coat of arms, and a profile design on a head beneath a crown at the top of the cross. Front of badge is inscribed "UNITED SERVICE CHALLENGE SHIELD". Obverse of badge is inscribed "W. TODD/-1901-". Issued to winning team members for competition between Victorian volunteer defence forces. Badge is an almost identical replica of the actual shield. The competition became international around 1901 under the auspices of the Victorian Rifle Association.

I'm interested in the history of the 1891 United Service Challenge Shield and believe it was made in UK in 1892 by William Hutton & Sons. Is there any further history on the creation of the replicas awarded to winning team members or the person who presented/paid for the original shield? The name I have looks like The Hon D E Mc Brode / Brour MLC. Any assistance would be appreciated.
