Brief Description
Trophy shield; presented to Ron Clarke in 1965 by the Helms Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles California. Cast and engraved silver plaque recessed into black painted wood surround. Features raised image of trophy with orb at top in centre, with banner unscrolled below with text: "VICTORY IS A WORTHY RESULT FOR WHICH TO STRIVE FAIRLY"; at bottom centre is raised image of Helms Hall of Los Angeles, California. Six plaques with athlete's names, continents and countries are at either side of raised trophy. Other inscriptions (in part): "HELMS WORLD TROPHY / 1965 AWARD / ... CREATED BY PAUL / H. HELMS TO HONOR / THE FOREMOST / AMATEUR ATHLETE / OF EACH CONTINENT / OF THE WORLD, / ANNUALLY, WITH / SELECTIONS DATING / FROM 1896". Brown felt backing, vinyl tag (possibly to assist removal from original case/housing), So Calif Trophy Co (maker's) gold sticker on verso.
